New leadership, new vision and a new beginning

In 2011 the Vail Symposium will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary with new leadership, new vision and a new beginning to start our next decade as the second oldest non-profit in the Vail Valley. We have hired Alby Segall to the newly created position of President/CEO. Alby has a long history with non-profits and will bring new energy and contacts to our efforts in fundraising, board development and programming. We have also hired Liana Moore as our new Executive Director. Liana, also has a non-profit background, great experience in marketing and PR and is a long time resident in Vail Valley. Alby and Liana combine to bring us great experience, a high level of energy and an exciting new vision for the Vail Symposium.
The Vail Symposium has been bringing exciting, educational and thought provoking programs to the Vail Valley for 39 years, all for the “Love of Learning." We provide many of these programs free of charge and the rest for only modest admission fees. For our 40th anniversary year we will be bringing you some exciting new programs, along with continuing our ever popular series such as our Unlimited Adventures, Speaking Locally and our film series. Watch your email and our website for announcements of our programming for 2011.
We are able to provide these programs for free or at a modest cost because of the support and generosity of those of you in the Vail community, including our many second home owners who are truly part of our wonderful community. We thank you for your continued support as we plan for our 40th year and especially would like to thank those of you who have joined our Founders 40 campaign by pledging a minimum of $1,000 a year for four years.
Vail is a great ski resort, the best in the world. However, my wife and I have chosen to make Vail our home, not just for the skiing, but because of the cultural and intellectual atmosphere and opportunities here. We actively support the Vail Symposium because it is such an integral part of the cultural and intellectual side of our community. Please help us preserve this atmosphere and these opportunities as we approach our 40th year. After all, we all have a love of learning.
Warm regards, James C. Ruh Chairman of the Board
I am thrilled to join the team!

Even though the Vail Symposium is 40 years old, I feel like the journey has just begun. I see so many opportunities ahead for re-energized leadership and new thinking about programs that engage the community. The partnerships we can create in the Vail Valley and in the Front Range are exciting, and the potential for events and lectures that feed our minds titillating.
Of course all this takes resources, human and financial. So please be patient with our relentless drive to put the Vail Symposium on solid footing for years to come. We have set a few ambitious goals, and now we will go about the business of achieving them. We hope to have programs underwritten so we can maintain a fee structure that allows for maximum and inclusive attendance. We will develop a “future fund” with the goal of putting one year’s operating expenses in the bank. And we will grow the recently announced “Founders Forty” to over 100 donors, each pledging a minimum of $1000 per year for four years.
Having the resources in hand is just the starting point. Creative and stimulating programs will build upon each other. Positive energy is contagious. The Vail Symposium will gather momentum and recreate the excitement it had under the stellar leadership of Terry Minger and Ebby Pinson. I look forward to working with you, the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board and the staff to make all this reality.
Thank you, Alby Segall President and CEO
Embarking on the next 40 years
As a ten-year member of the Vail community, I am very excited to embark on a new adventure with the Vail Symposium. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to get to know even more of the personalities who make Vail the place I call home—from supporters and attendees to the experts and adventurers who comprise the Vail Symposium speaker roster.
It is very exciting to be a part of a new team at a time of historic celebration for the second oldest organization in the town. We will be continuing our successful current programs while also reaching back into our past to create programs that tie into our history.
So many people have touched and shaped this organization—from Town Manager Terry Minger, original board members Elaine Kelton to more recent board members such as Ebby Pinson, Karen Mortar, Priscilla O’Neil and Rob LeVine. They all leave big shoes to fill but our team is up to the challenge and will match them with our passion for this community and organization. We are looking forward to securing our financial and programmatic sustainability for another forty years, while having a significant impact on the community through our variety of stimulating and high profile program offerings.
Thank you to all the individuals who have shaped the history, future and long-term sustainability of the Vail Symposium. We owe our success to you!
With gratitude, Liana Moore Executive Director
Board of Directors & Advisory Council
