Georgetown University’s premier co-ed a cappella group, the Phantoms, entertains for the evening with their repertoire of 50 plus rock, pop and R&B songs. Following their vocal performance they will give a presentation on the a cappella tradition at Georgetown and explain how they arrange their own music.
Since their inception in 1988 the Phantoms have performed at the White House, the State Department, the National Museum of Natural History, Blair House, and the Kennedy Center. In 2010, the Phantoms competed for the first time in the International Competition for Collegiate A Cappella and won Outstanding Soloist in the Quarterfinal and Semifinal rounds. The Phantoms are also co-hosts of the annual invitational, DC A Cappella Festival (DCAF) held in Georgetown's Gaston Hall each November.
The Georgetown Phantoms were founded by Huey-Jin Soon in 1988 as a Christmas caroling group. According to legend, one day local Jesuit “Pops” Davis approached the then-unnamed group and asked what they were called. Founding member Travis Sutton immediately replied “we are the Phantom Singers, because no one knows where we will be singing next!” The name stuck, and The Phantom Singers (eventually just The Phantoms) were official.
The Phantoms quickly widened their repertoire beyond holiday songs, incorporating various rock and pop hits.
